The sun shone brightly over the terrace of the Free Library of Philadelphia’s Skyline Room, where a gentle breeze added to the atmosphere of celebration. On this picturesque day, the Philadelphia Commission on Human Relations (PCHR) honored 11 remarkable individuals for their dedication, resilience, and commitment to promoting equality, compassion, and humanitarian efforts. These Social Justice Awards recognized achievements in arts and culture, community service, and public service, including law enforcement.
The awards ceremony, held on Thursday, Oct. 17, 2024, was hosted by Shaynah Ferreira, Anchor and Reporter for ‘Good Day Philadelphia’ on Fox 29. After a long hiatus since 2015, the event returned to celebrate those working tirelessly to advance social equality in Philadelphia. The awards, formerly known as the Human Rights Awards, are a central event in October, which is recognized as Human Relations Month in the city.
“The 2024 Social Justice Awards Luncheon was a powerful celebration of the individuals who work tirelessly to make Philadelphia a more equitable and inclusive city,” said Kia Ghee, PCHR Executive Director.
“The honorees inspire us all with their dedication to bridging divides and promoting understanding across our communities. Their contributions remind us that real change is possible when we come together to advocate for justice and protect the rights of every Philadelphian.”
Honoree Jacen Bowman was in awe of the class of winners this year, including himself. “It feels surreal to be acknowledged for my work,” he said. I was really amazed at how many people knew who I was or the work I (have) been doing. I am truly humbled .. to receive this recognition.” Following the ceremony, Bowman had a chance to reconnect with Deputy Commissioner Myeisha Massey, who had worked alongside his uncle, a former police commissioner.
During the luncheon, PCHR also paid tribute to Regina Austin, a former Commissioner who served for 16 years before stepping down in January. In addition, Fair Housing Commissioner David T. Rammler, Esq., was posthumously honored for his lifelong dedication to promoting equity in housing. Rammler passed away in September, and his wife, Suzanne Young, was present to receive a tribute on his behalf from the City and Mayor Cherelle Parker.
In honor of his legacy, starting in 2025, the newly created David T. Rammler Award will be presented to individuals who show an exceptional commitment to advocating for fair and equitable housing in Philadelphia.
