Tell us your story.
Hello, my name is Mingxin (Shayla) Wang and I’m from Vancouver, Canada! While growing up surrounded by beaches and mountains was great, I was eager to seek out new horizons. This led me to Toronto, where I obtained an Honours Bachelor’s degree from the University of Toronto, double majoring in Criminology & Sociolegal Studies and Human Geography, with a minor in Sociology. It was during my undergraduate studies that I witnessed firsthand how these disciplines intertwine and shape social policy. Fueled by this realization, I found myself drawn to the University of Pennsylvania, where I am currently completing an M.S. in Social Policy. My research interests span urban development, human rights, and social inequality, with the ultimate goal of effecting change for vulnerable members and disenfranchised communities of society.
What values underpin your work and why?
My professional values are deeply rooted in my social science background, which has instilled in me a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). Having lived in various cities, I’ve had the privilege of engaging with individuals from diverse backgrounds, enriching my understanding of societal complexities. This exposure has reinforced my belief in fostering a justice-oriented approach to my work, aiming not just for equality at a moment in time but sustainable solutions for the long term.
Why are you interested in being a part of the PHL Service Design Studio?
Having lived in Philadelphia for almost a year, I have witnessed the rich tapestry of cultures, backgrounds, and socioeconomic conditions that define the city. This experience has underscored the critical need for tailored service delivery approaches that cater to the unique needs of each community. Thus, I am eager to be part of a team that shares a dedication to working toward making services more accessible and effective for the residents of Philadelphia.
What’s your most favorite thing to do in your down time and why?
In my free time, I like to try new and interesting dishes. I’ve been food blogging for a number of years now as it allows me to combine my love of photography and my interest in diverse culinary experiences.
