PHILADELPHIA – Department of Streets Commissioner Kristin Del Rossi announced today that there will be a new traffic pattern on the Island Avenue Project to advance the project to the next phase of construction; and that there will be temporary lane closures and lane restrictions as the current temporary speed tables on Cobbs Creek Parkway will be converted to permanent traffic calming measures.

Island Avenue Project

Starting the week of June 17, 2024, southbound vehicular traffic along Island Avenue will be reduced to one lane between Lindbergh and Suffolk Avenues. The southbound one lane configuration is expected to be in-place up to two weeks. During this time, the contractor will be performing roadway construction to prepare for the new southbound traffic crossover which is the next phase of construction.

After the crossover area is constructed, the contractor will reopen the southbound Island Avenue service road. Traffic will also be diverted over the at-grade Septa tracks through the new Island Avenue crossover, located between Lindbergh and Suffolk Avenues. Once the new crossover area is operational, the existing crossover between Tanager and 76th Streets will be eliminated.

Overall, the project involves roadway improvements along Island Avenue from Woodland to Suffolk Avenues which includes traffic signal improvements, roadway resurfacing and striping. There will also be an addition of grass median and bicycle lanes, ADA improvements, reconstruction of trolley platforms. In addition, there will be intersection upgrades and other miscellaneous construction.

Work will be staged to maintain vehicular traffic and pedestrian crossings throughout construction. The contractor will require temporary lane and parking restrictions while completing work.

Temporary “No Parking” signs will be posted in advance of each scheduled activity. Cars must be removed from the work sites during the hours posted on the ‘No Parking’ signs to avoid being towed.  In the event a car is towed, residents should contact 12th Police District (Contact: 215-686-3120) to determine its location. Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling around the work area.

Construction is being performed by Tony DePaul and Son and is expected to be completed by the end of summer 2025. The value of the contract is approximately $16.7M and is being funded using 100% Federal funds.

Cobbs Creek Parkway Project

Starting the week of June 17, 2024, crews will work on Cobbs Creek, removing the temporary speed tables and replacing them with asphalt speed tables. During this time, the contractor will perform roadway construction, preparing the roadway for the speed tables.

Temporary “No Parking” signs will be posted in advance of each scheduled activity. Cars must be removed from the work sites during the hours posted on the ‘No Parking’ signs to avoid being towed. In the event a car is towed, residents should contact the 18th Police District (Contact: 215-686-3180) to determine its location. Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling around the work area.
