Philadelphia will remember victims and honor community groups and organizations working to end gun violence when we observe National Gun Violence Awareness Day on Friday, June 7, and Wear Orange Weekend, June 7 – 9.
Although the incidence of gun violence in Philadelphia has decreased from its peak in 2021, there is still work to be done. Last year, 1,666 people fell victim to gun violence in Philadelphia. Of those people, 374 lost their lives.
Gun violence is a public health issue. When seen through a public health lens, we are able to focus on those things that can be done to address the root causes of violence. Violence is preventable when its root causes are identified and addressed.
With that in mind, the Philadelphia Department of Public Health is working to identify risks and protective factors in different communities throughout the city. Reducing violence in Philadelphia is a collaborative effort between community members, organizations, employers, and City representatives. Together, we can find solutions by working side by side in communities most impacted by violence.
The City supports community efforts that raise awareness about gun violence. Please join us in observing Gun Violence Awareness Day and Wear Orange Weekend at these events:
