PHILADELPHIA – City officials, Councilmember Brian J. O’Neill, and community members gathered for Rebuild’s ribbon cutting of Pelbano Recreation Center, which broke ground this past October.

The 10-acre site, located in the 10th Council District received a $1.3 million investment, made possible by the City’s Rebuild program, Philadelphia’s historic investment in public spaces. Just in time for summer, Pelbano’s updates include a new interactive playground, refreshed basketball courts, and upgraded equipment for all to enjoy.

“Our Capital Program Office through the work of Rebuild is delivering on my Administration’s promise to bring high-quality parks and playgrounds to communities across our city and we are excited to see the completed renovations at Pelbano” said Mayor Cherelle L. Parker. “We know these much-needed improvements will promote active lifestyles and outdoor activities in a healthy and safe space for our children and youth.”

“I strongly believe in supplying our communities with high quality recreational spaces,” said Councilmember Brian J. O’Neill (10th District). “Because of the Rebuild program, the Rhawnhurst neighborhood has a safe, accessible, and enjoyable outdoor space to utilize this summer and beyond.”

Rhawnhurst is renowned for its active community, and the recent improvements to Pelbano will further support a healthy and active lifestyle. The Rebuild team collaborated with the Pelbano community to redesign the space, fostering togetherness, and honoring George C. Pelbano.

A dedicated community advocate, George C. Pelbano devoted himself to youth sports by overseeing the Rhawnhurst Athletic Association for 40 years. In recognition of his contributions, the recreation center was named in his honor in 2003. Pelbano Recreation Center also offers a gym, fitness room, and multipurpose spaces.

“Community spaces play a crucial role in fostering education and physical well-being across all age groups,” said Director of the Capital Program Office Aparna Palantino. “It is vital that we continue to invest in providing every community with clean, green, and safe spaces that cultivate creativity, joy, and unity. I am thrilled that this renovated site will continue to promote active lifestyles for today’s youth and the generations to come.”

This community hub received extensive upgrades including:

  • Replacement of the current sprayground
  • New multigenerational playground
  • Updated multisport court featuring a walking/tricycle loop, volleyball, and other sports
  • Landscaping and benches

“I am ecstatic to celebrate the updated playground and courts at Pelbano Recreation Center,” said Philadelphia Parks & Recreation Commissioner Susan Slawson. “Thanks to the City’s capital investments through the Rebuild program, we’re able to continue to provide quality programming and safe recreational spaces to Philadelphians regardless of zip code.”
