PHILADELPHIA – Mayor Jim Kenney and Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw today released the following statements in response to the District Attorney’s public release of body-worn camera footage from the incident, and the charges against Officer Mike Dial in the fatal shooting of Eddie Irizarry.
Mayor Jim Kenney:
“The footage released today of the police-involved shooting of Eddie Irizarry contains graphic and violent images and may be distressing for some to watch.
“My heart is with the loved ones of Eddie Irizarry as they continue to grieve the loss of his life. I recognize that no action that we take as a City can bring him back, but I am confident that the District Attorney’s Office is working toward justice for Mr. Irizarry and his family.
“I have watched the footage and I understand that it may provoke anger and upset in our communities. We ask that the public remain peaceful in demonstrations and calls for accountability as we continue to process this tragedy as a city.
“We know that residents are looking for answers. As new questions arise after the release of this footage, we ask for patience as a full and thorough investigation is being conducted through the Philadelphia Police Department’s Internal Affairs Bureau. I am confident that this process will provide for additional accountability and transparency of this incident.”
Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw:
“Today, the District Attorney’s Office announced that former Philadelphia Police Officer Mark Dial has been charged with murder.
“While the criminal investigation by our department’s Officer Involved Shooting Investigation Unit has concluded, the administrative aspect of our investigation remains underway with Internal Affairs. The Philadelphia Police Department remains committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of the communities we serve, as well as upholding the integrity of the administrative investigation in a fair, equitable, and transparent manner.
“We will conclude our administrative investigation as soon as possible to ensure justice and closure is attained for all affected by the death of Mr. Irizarry.”
