Philadelphia Parks & Recreation Interim Commissioner Orlando Rendon joined Councilmember Brian O’Neill and the Northeast Philly community to cut the ribbon on new playground equipment at Thomas Mitchell Playground.

PHILADELPHIA – On Thursday, July 13th, Philadelphia Parks & Recreation Interim Commissioner Orlando Rendon joined Councilmember Brian O’Neill (District 10), and Morell Park community members to celebrate the installation of new playground equipment, safety surfacing, and a new sprayground at Mitchell Playground. A ceremonial ribbon cutting took place on the playground, alongside summer campers and neighborhood community members.

The $782,000 project was the culmination of a community effort to revitalize the playground. Modern equipment was selected for the space, diversifying play opportunities at a playground originally opened in 1968. New landscaping, shaded picnic areas, and a sprayground have further enhanced the beloved community rec center.

“This playground has long been one of the gems of Northeast Philly” said Philadelphia Parks & Recreation Interim Commissioner Orlando Rendon. “I’m thrilled that these new improvements will ensure Mitchell Playground continues to serve as a high-quality, safe, and fun public space for future generations of families.”
