PHILADELPHIA—The city of Philadelphia is under a Code Orange Fine Particles Action Day Alert. This alert means that the air is unhealthy for sensitive groups. The general public is less likely to be affected. Air quality may vary throughout the city and throughout the day, but is expected to improve as the day goes on.
In light of the improved air quality, all City services, including pools and outdoor summer camps, will be operating normally.
While the air quality is improved, it is possible that those with heart or lung conditions, older adults, and young children may experience effects from the smoke. Those groups are encouraged to:
- Choose less strenuous activities (like walking instead of running) so you don’t breathe as hard.
- Shorten the amount of time you are active outdoors.
- Be active outdoors when air quality is better.
- Consider wearing a high quality mask to limit your exposure to pollutants.
The Health Department also recommends that everyone pay attention to their body. Even people without underlying conditions may still be feeling the effects of poor air quality. Go slow and go inside or seek medical attention if you are not feeling well.
The latest update on Philadelphia’s air quality is always available on the Health Department’s
website, and information on how to stay safe during an air quality event can be found on the
City’s blog post.
