PHILADELPHIA – Streets Commissioner Carlton Williams announced today that bridge demolition activities on the Montgomery Avenue Bridge Replacement Project takes place this week. Demolition will occur in the overnight hours between 10:00 pm to 6:00 am. However, to avoid interruption of the active, electrified Amtrak rail line, most of the demolition activities will occur between 12:00 and 5:00 am, during Amtrak power and train outages. Demolition will primarily occur Sunday through Thursday evenings, but occasionally there will activity on a Friday. It is expected that the existing bridge will be completely demolished and removed within the next six months.
This project involves the demolition and removal of the existing five span bridge carrying Montgomery Avenue over and above the railroad tracks of AMTRAK and Conrail. The project includes the construction of a new single-span, steel, composite, multi-girder superstructure with a reinforced concrete deck supported by full height reinforced concrete abutments. Project also includes construction of moment slabs in the bridge approaches, new curb and sidewalk, street lighting, ADA curb ramps, and other miscellaneous construction, as well as construction of a portion of the brick roadway in the bridge approach.
Construction will be performed by the bridge contractor, Buckley & Company, of Philadelphia. Construction is expected to be completed by the Spring of 2024. The value of the construction contract is $17.2M, and is being funded using Federal (80%) and State (15%) grants along with City Capital funds (5%).
