PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia Department of Public Health today announced 201 additional confirmed cases of COVID-19 novel coronavirus in Philadelphia. That brings the number of confirmed cases to 29,303. The increase in cases is due to a large number of test results being received by the City. Nonetheless, cases are still rising in Philadelphia.

The Department of Public Health confirmed one additional fatality in Philadelphia. This brings the number of residents who have succumbed to the virus in Philadelphia to 1,676. Of the 1,676 total deaths, 855 (51%) were long-term care facility residents. Current and cumulative totals of both symptomatic and asymptomatic positive cases in Philadelphia prisons are now posted on the testing and data page of the City’s COVID-19 website.

Park Safety and Responsible Usage: Philadelphia’s watershed parks have experienced a sharp increase in usage during the COVID-19 pandemic. Philadelphia Parks & Recreation reminds visitors to follow all park rules, wear a mask, and practice safe social distancing. Residents are reminded that swimming and bathing are prohibited in Philadelphia’s rivers, streams, and waterways, and is extremely dangerous for even the most experienced swimmers. Bathrooms remain closed in Parks & Recreation sites, and visitors should carry out any trash they carry in. This weekend, Philadelphia Parks & Recreation social distancing ambassadors will join park rangers at the Wissahickon Valley Park to welcome visitors and educate them on safe and responsible park usage.

Gym Inspections Update: The City allowed gyms in Philadelphia to reopen on effective Monday, July 20, with strict guidelines requiring masking by all staff and patrons, proper social distancing within the facility, a cap on the number of people in classes, and frequent cleaning. The Health Department has since, for the first time, begun inspecting gyms. Of the 12 gyms inspected so far, 11 were following the COVID rules perfectly. During the inspection of the other, a patron was found to be unmasked. The gym immediately provided this patron with a mask and the gym passed inspection. Unannounced inspections will continue while COVID-19 guidance is being enforced.
