On January 16, the City held a press conference to update residents and members of the media on the current and future work following the December 19 explosion and fire on the 1400 block of S. 8th Street.
Fire Commissioner Adam K. Thiel said the Fire Marshal’s Office determined that a gas leak caused the explosion. However, the root cause of the gas leak has not been identified. If you think you smell gas, or have other safety concerns about your home, call 9-1-1 and the Fire Department will come out to investigate.
There is an ongoing investigation being conducted by the Safety Division of the state Public Utility Commission (PUC) – which is part of the PUC’s independent Bureau of Investigation and Enforcement (I&E). The Safety Division has worked closely with the Philadelphia Fire Marshal and other agencies during the emergency response and initial stages of the investigation. While the full investigation may take up to a year or longer to reach any conclusions, I&E will not hesitate to take immediate action to address health or public safety concerns that are identified. To get updates on the status of this investigation, residents may call PUC’s Office of Communications at (717) 787-5722.
PWD Commissioner Randy E. Hayman provided updates on the ongoing work of the Water Department.
Final repairs need to be made to fill any depressed or washed out areas below the street. Please note, this work may uncover or create additional unanticipated issues. Once the street is broken out and leveled off, PWD will hire from an existing contract to seal six abandoned sewer laterals and repair one active lateral.
The City anticipates that these repairs will take one month, weather permitting, with an estimated completion in mid-February. The City apologizes for the ongoing disruption caused to residents in the area. PGW’s Executive Vice President & COO Doug Moser said that a temporary gas main has been installed to service the homes on the block, but that plans are in place to install a permanent gas main in spring or summer. Additionally, PWD has begun the design process to replace the water main on this block immediately following the gas main replacement.
