A fin-tastic way to enjoy the last days of summer is by fishing at one of Parks & Rec’s sites. Fishing is not only a great activity to show off your skills, but it also promotes relaxation and connection with the local environment. With some bait and sunscreen, you’re on the hook for a fun-filled day with family and friends.
One of the most popular places to fish is the Fish Hatchery at Pleasant Hill Park in Northeast Philadelphia. This 31-acre site is next to Pleasant Hill Park on the Torresdale section of the Delaware River. Besides the fishing ponds, the park includes looping pathways, playground equipment, picnic tables, sports fields, and restrooms.
The park’s four scenic fish hatchery ponds are especially beloved by young children learning how to fish, and those for whom fishing is a lifelong hobby. (This video from 1965 shows the enduring popularity of the site.) You are sure to catch many fish in these ponds, and may spot some turtles and other wildlife! The fish hatchery’s services include:
- Free equipment and bait.
- Summer fishing programs for children and campers.
- Open fishing for children under the ages of 16 every Saturday until November between 10 a.m.-1 p.m.
- Activities for over 2,000 campers each season.
- Catch-and-release fishing.
Another great fishing opportunity is the 2019 Philly Fun Fishing Fest!
This catch-and-release fishing event is celebrating its 15th year. Enjoy a morning of fishing and friendly competition on the Schuylkill Banks section of Schuylkill River Park on Saturday, September 5.
