The March 31 deadline for paying your 2019 Real Estate Tax is approaching fast. What should you do if you filed a property assessment appeal, and you’re still waiting for a decision? First, don’t panic.
You have options, and you have time.
If you filed an appeal on time, City Council legislation gives you two choices this year:
- Pay your 2019 Real Estate Tax bill based on the property assessment you appealed, or
- Pay your 2019 Real Estate Tax bill based on the 2018 property assessment.
The best way to pay is online – if pay by eCheck, it’s FREE. You can also pay by eCheck over the phone, or mail a check or money order. If you pay before February 28, you get a 1% discount.
New bill
Whatever you decide, you will receive a new Real Estate Tax bill once your appeal is resolved. Depending on the decision, you may have a credit or a balance on your account.
If you owe money, you will have 30 days to pay the amount. If you pay within those 30 days, you can still get the 1% discount. However, after 30 days your account will be considered late, and include extra costs. If you can’t pay in full, please contact the Department of Revenue about a payment agreement immediately.
If the City owes you money, you will automatically get a credit for a future Real Estate Tax bill. If you prefer, you may request a refund.
Questions about the status of your appeal should be directed to the Office of Property Assessment. If you have questions about Real Estate Tax, you can email revenue@phila.gov or call (215) 686-6442.
