City officials and community members cutting the ribbon at Malcolm X Park

Malcolm X Park
On August 2, Philadelphia Water Department Commissioner Debra McCarty led a ribbon cutting at Malcolm X Park. The ceremony welcomed new Green City, Clean Waters features at the park. Nearly 30 new trees were planted around the park’s border in a set of four stormwater “tree trenches.”

More on these trenches:

  • They are built into new sidewalks.
  • They allow the roots to soak up and filter dirty stormwater runoff.
  • They are an example of the green tools installed all over the city under the Green City, Clean Waters program.
  • They help capture more than 84,000 gallons of stormwater runoff from the surrounding streets each time the neighborhood gets an inch of rain.
