Community Schools’ community days combine fun activities, useful resources and great food, in neighborhoods all across the city! Many Community Schools are hosting community days to celebrate the end of the school year. What better way to get ready for summer?
Last weekend, Southwark School and South Philadelphia High School held community events that provided fun, exercise, and activities for all.
At Southwark, a Rolling Rodeo event allowed children to test their skills on an obstacle course in the schoolyard, all while getting a great workout.
The event also emphasized bicycle safety. Jefferson University Hospital, in partnership with Indego, offered a new helmet to every student who needed one.
At South Philadelphia High School’s Community Day, children also enjoyed a number of fun activities including face painting, riding a fire truck, and free Scholastic books, all courtesy of Life Church.
There was something for everyone, including parents and neighbors. At Southwark, the International Food Fair, run by members of the Southwark community, provided guests with delicious food – including fresh mie udang aceh, an Indonesian staple, and delicious sanwin makin.
At South Philadelphia High School the Common Market Food Stand and Uplift also provided fresh for members in attendance, giving out over 700 pounds of food during the event!
“It was so great to see so many students and their families come out,” said Janelle Harper, Community Schools Coordinator for South Philadelphia High School. “It’s fun events like these that bring the community together and let people see that we’re here for them with whatever they need!”
Community days are one of many ways that Community Schools welcome children, families and neighbors into the school for fun activities and valuable services. Visit the Mayor’s Office of Education’s website to learn more about events and services available at each school!
