Last year, the City signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA). The PPA will enable the City’s partner to build a large solar project in Adams County, Pennsylvania.

Once built, it will be the largest solar project in the state and one of the largest renewable PPAs signed by any city in the US. It is also a major step towards achieving Philadelphia’s clean energy vision.

The solar project will provide 22 percent of the City’s electricity needs. It will power municipal buildings like City Hall, police stations, and recreation centers. But now, this project needs a name!

Why a naming contest?

  • We want to hear from you, what do you think we should name this project?
  • The City retains naming rights for the solar project, so we want to get input from residents of Philadelphia and Adams Counties.
  • Since the City is buying a majority of the electricity generated by this project, this contest allows the residents that will benefit from its clean energy to have a stake in naming the project.
  • The winning name will become the unofficial name for the project and be featured in all public communications.

Naming inspiration

  • This solar project moves the City closer to its energy goals.
    • 100% renewable electricity by 2030 for municipal facilities
    • lowering carbon pollution which contributes to climate change, and
    • stabilizing electricity rates at a low cost.
  • This project will engage a variety of businesses and individuals in the clean economy.
  • Adams County is in South Central Pennsylvania. It is home to historic Gettysburg, large portions of Michaux State Forest, and some of the state’s largest fruit orchards.
