What we do

The Philadelphia Fire Department (PFD) provides fire protection and emergency medical services (EMS) to the City of Philadelphia. We are the largest fire department in Pennsylvania, with one of the busiest EMS divisions in the country.

Members of the Fire Department fight fires, provide emergency medical treatment, and rescue people from dangerous situations. Our engines, ladders, and ambulances are housed at 63 stations across the City.

We have specialized divisions that investigate fires, deal with hazardous materials, and help protect Philadelphia International Airport. We also teach the public about fire safety and work to prevent fires through smoke alarm installation.

Jeffrey Thompson

Fire Commissioner

Fire Commissioner Jeffrey Thompson is a native Philadelphian raised in Germantown. He attended Murrell Dobbins Tech High School and Penn State University and received a B.S. in Emergency Management from Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. Commissioner Thompson joined the Philadelphia Fire Department in 1989 as a member of Cadet Class 162. He has worked at stations all over the city during his 35-year PFD career, including spending more than two decades in North Philadelphia as a Firefighter, Lieutenant, Captain and Battalion Chief with Engine 50, Ladder 12, and Battalion 8. He has also held positions such as Executive Chief; adjunct instructor at the Fire Academy; Special Investigations Officer; Deputy Fire Commissioner (Planning); and 1st Deputy Fire Commissioner (Operations). His father also served the City of Philadelphia as a firefighter and retired in 1988 after 25 years of service. Commissioner Thompson is married with two adult daughters.
