Division of Safe Neighborhoods

What we do

The Division of Safe Neighborhoods implements strategies and initiatives to prevent, reduce, and end violence in Philadelphia. Our division is particularly focused on addressing gun violence.

We work to create safer communities by:

  • Promoting violence prevention citywide – partnering with law enforcement, City agencies, and the community to develop and implement Gun Violence Intervention (GVI) strategies;
  • Investing in what works – using data and research to inform our investments in violence prevention; and
  • Strengthening communities – mobilizing supports and providing positive alternatives in communities to help boost resilience among residents impacted by violence.

We support these programs:

  • Community Crisis Intervention Program (CCIP)
  • Violence Prevention Partnership
  • Group Violence Intervention (GVI)
  • Group Violence Intervention – Juvenile (GVI-J)
  • Rapid Response Team
  • Pushing Progress Philly (P3)
  • Incarcerated Community Crisis Intervention Program (ICCIP)

    Philadelphia City Council formally recognized June as Reentry Awareness Month in 2019, citing the intersections of reentry as a social, public safety, community and economic issue. Every day, hundreds of thousands of Philadelphians come home from federal, state, and local prisons and jails. They begin the process of returning to our communities, raising families, seeking employment, and trying to build stable lives. In June we celebrate the returning citizens who show up every day with resilience and determination and work to bring awareness as well as honor the providers, employers, advocates, and faith leaders doing this work alongside us.
