MARCH, 2015
Dear Friends:
The next few weeks will bring good things! Yes, spring is one of them. But before the arrival of warmer weather, we celebrate something equally positive: the completion and distribution of our branding materials. In the coming weeks, the Communications Unit will disseminate the Pathport to PPR; Culture Book; Vision, Mission and Values posters; and photo posters to permanent staff members and department facilities. Combined, these products will help staff, citizens and partners understand the department’s assets, functions and activities.
In many ways, the individual products complement each other. While the Pathport to PPR provides a broad and rich overview of Philadelphia Parks & Recreation’s structure, function and budget, the Culture Book examines who we are and why we do what we do every day. The Vision, Mission and Values posters state what we promise and where we’re headed; the photo posters convey those promises through strong visual imagery of our parks, playgrounds, historic houses and recreation centers.
These powerful booklets and posters speak to the difference PPR makes in people’s lives; they are testimony that your day-to-day work is that difference. Thank you for sharing your stories with us.

Furniture Donation for Recreation Centers |
In December, Wanda Paul from the Philadelphia Convention & Visitors Bureau (PHLCVB) donated over $100,000 dollars’ worth of furniture to our recreation centers via Commissioner Susan Slawson. Warren Gillis, Greg Jones and their crews have been instrumental in making sure that desks, chairs and other furniture have been distributed to our centers where there was the greatest need.
Pictured above is JJ Pospiech, Recreation Leader I for Clemente Recreation Center and one of the many recipients of this gift. Brian Sell and Miss Diane from the after-school program at Athletic were especially appreciative of their new furniture. They quickly traded out their old metal desks for new, wooden desks, bookshelves and special chairs to match. Should you have the occasion to frequent some of our centers, especially in District 6, look for this new addition that has brightened the lives of our recreation leaders and RSI’s.

Ralph Brooks Tot Lot Groundbreaking |
On December 22, Philadelphia Parks & Recreation, City officials, Philadelphia Eagle Connor Barwin and community partners participated in a ceremonial ground breaking event for renovations to the Ralph Brooks Tot Lot at 20th and Tasker Streets in South Philadelphia.
The Tot lot is named after former South Philadelphia resident Ralph Brooks. At age seven, Mr. Brooks was paralyzed during a shooting at the playground in 1988. The incident galvanized the community and the park has since carried his name as a symbol against violence in South Philadelphia.
Renovations to the Tot Lot include improvements to stormwater management features, a rain garden at the southern end of the park and an underground storage trench along its western side, and playground equipment. A new play area will be installed and the basketball courts will be repaved.

Over this past winter holiday, I enjoyed just such activity daily working on a Habitat for Humanity construction site in Charlotte, North Carolina. Participation in the service trip was organized through the student Alternate Break group at the University of Pennsylvania, of which I am a member.

Into the Parks Adventure Club By Trish Fries, Environmental Education Program Specialist, Wissahickon Environmental Center |
This year, Philadelphia Parks & Recreation received a grant for $10,000 from the US Forest Service that allows children from recreation centers, surrounded by concrete, to explore the forests and waterways of Philadelphia’s parks. Throughout the year, the environmental education staff, supported by the US Forest Service field station staff and other PPR staff, is working with children ages 8-12 from Palumbo, Waterview and James Wright Recreation Centers. Beginning with an introduction to nature in their neighborhood, the 23 children then took their first trip to either Wissahickon or Pennypack Parks. A series of six trips are scheduled for one Saturday each month. Children are picked up at 10 a.m. and returned by 3 p.m., traveling by bus and van to their adventure.
In November, children from Palumbo discovered the meadows of the Andorra Natural Area and played hide and seek in the tall grasses. They tasted frozen icicles from a recently cut grape vine and made their own healthy lunch to enjoy out in the woods. The day finished with a campfire, and one girl exclaiming, “This was the best adventure EVER!”

Hank Gathers Rec Center Improvements Complete |
On December 23, Mayor Michael A. Nutter, Michael DiBerardinis, Deputy Mayor for Environmental and Community Resources, and The Trust for Public Land announced the completion of the newly upgraded playground at Hank Gathers Recreation Center in the Strawberry Mansion neighborhood of North Philadelphia.
Seventy-five neighborhood residents worked with the Department of Parks and Recreation and The Trust for Public Land through a series of design workshops to select features that would improve the recreation center grounds. New amenities include new playground equipment with safety surfacing, a water spray park, upgraded seating areas, a picnic grove under a canopy of trees, a walking path, and new fencing. A community event celebrating the playground will be organized for early spring 2015.
The project is the second of ten planned sites to be completed through a public/private partnership among the City of Philadelphia, The Trust for Public Land, the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and a variety of other partners. The initiative, known as Green2015, is part of Mayor Nutter’s comprehensive plan to increase significantly outdoor recreational opportunities and green infrastructure in underserved neighborhoods throughout Philadelphia. The first Green2015 project, a new and improved greened William Dick Elementary Schoolyard, recently received a Merit Award in Environmental Enhancement from the American Society of Landscape Architects NJ Chapter.

After School REACH Activities at Roosevelt Playground |
As part of PPR’s REACH system, the After School students at Roosevelt Playground received lessons on bird migration and why birds need feathers.
In January, the children made wings from heart-shaped cookies cut in half then decorated them with M&M candies, Jolly Rancher gum drops and marshmallows. They affixed the candies to the wings with various colors of icing. The best part? The children got to eat their cookies after they made them, remarking that they never thought bird wings would taste so good.
